Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers blocked the advancement of a bill that would begin to reform the state's charter school regulations.

Sen. Kate Brophy McGee called her proposal to change the oversight of charter schools a compromise.

The bill would give more power to the state Attorney General to investigate charter schools, but did not address some financial practices that are illegal in traditional public schools.

“SB 1394 doesn’t have the support needed for passage in the House, so Speaker Bowers will not to assign it to committee,” said Matthew Specht,  director of communications for the Republican Caucus in the Arizona House of Representatives.

Bowers also rejected another education bill. Senate Bill 1217 would create a cheaper tuition rate for Arizona high school graduates, including young immigrants with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status.
