ADOT Installing In-Pavement Sensors To Monitor Traffic Flow

Published: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 - 5:05am

Arizona drivers can expect several closures in the coming weeks. ADOT crews are installing new in-pavement sensors to monitor traffic flow.

After installing sensors on Interstate 10, U.S. 60 and State Route 51, ADOT is now finishing its project along the I-17.

Doug Nintzel with ADOT says the new sensors will help them make more accurate travel time estimates displayed on electronic billboards over freeways.

“It also helps DPS troopers and ADOT in responding to incidents because we’re able to see where traffic is slowing, look for incidents and the faster you can clear a crash or a stalled vehicle for example, it’s gonna be safer along the freeway,” he said.

Overnight closures are scheduled through this Thursday, between Peoria Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Closures will also be in place this weekend between Indian School Road and Grant Street.

When the project is finished, 85 locations on Phoenix-area freeways will have new traffic-flow sensors.
