IRC, Tappetite Team Up To Help Refugees Make Money

Published: Sunday, April 16, 2017 - 5:05am

The International Rescue Committee has partnered with Tappetite to give refugees an easier way to make money. Those refugees may have even more resources in the coming months.

When Tappetite launched two years ago it provided at-home bakers with an outlet to sell their sweets. But now it’s serving a larger purpose. Tappetite founder Kay Diggs says her company and the IRC have launched a fundraising campaign to make a commercial kitchen available to refugees.

“The state allows only certain foods to be baked and sold from home. With a certified commercial kitchen those bakers and other refugees will have better chances to be selling," Diggs said.

Diggs says about 30 Syrian refugees are baking with Tappetite right now, and they will soon welcome others from South America and Africa. She says the Syrian refugees make sweets like baklava.

Diggs says the IRC hopes to have enough money for the kitchen by summer and begin building it in the fall.
