Saturday is Chinese New Year, the start of the Year of the Rooster. At the Phoenix Chinese Senior Center, people celebrated with food, music and dance.

Saturday is the start of the Chinese New Year — one of the most important holidays in China. People are celebrating all over the world, Phoenix included.

Like every Chinese New Year, the Phoenix Chinese Senior Center was packed. Many of the seniors there are originally from China, like Teresa Jung. The center gives Chinese people a place to come together, she Jung, since many are scattered throughout the Valley.

Looking ahead, she said we can expect a year filled with news and surprises.

And for people born during the Year of the Rooster, “you’ll be a very good fortune and long life,” Jung said, “and people born this year is very smart and is a good speaker.”

Next month, Phoenix will recognize the Chinese New Year with a three-day celebration of Chinese food, culture and heritage. Known as Chinese Week, it starts Feb. 10 and takes places at various spots in the city.
