The Arizona Supreme Court will hear oral arguments next month in a case pitting the state against one of its cities.

It challenges a state law approved last year that allows the state to withhold some money from cities that are found to be violating Arizona law.

In Tucson’s case, it’s an ordinance allowing the city to destroy firearms it seizes.

Cities and towns across the state are following this case closely. Political observers are also tracking the relationship this year between the state and its cities.

We have two perspectives on that today, starting with Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny. He’s also president of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.

More than 200 miles to the north and west of Chandler, Lake Havasu City Mayor Mark Nexsen has some of the same concerns.
