Two former Utah Attorneys General were arrested on Tuesday as part of a bribery investigation.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill said John Swallow and Mark Shurtleff were taken into custody Tuesday on charges of bribery, evidence tampering and other counts.

Gill accuses the men of accepting payoffs involving gold coins and other luxury gifts.

Both men have since been released. Shurtleff and Swallow both deny any wrongdoing. Swallow says the charges are motivated by politics. He and Shurtleff are Republicans. Gill is a Democrat.

The arrests come just more than a year after two county attorneys began scrutinizing the relationships Shurtleff and Swallow had with several businessmen who were in trouble with regulators.

Shurtleff left office in January 2013 after a dozen years as Utah's attorney general.
