As Arizona votes on this primary election day, there’s confirmation that the FBI is looking into evidence that election systems in the state were compromised by hackers.

While state officials claim there was no harm done, cyber security experts say more fortification is needed.

Arizona Secretary of State’s office confirmed earlier this summer that Arizona’s election website was briefly taken down to deal with a “credible and serious threat” to the voter registration system.  

But spokesman Matt Roberts says it was a localized attack caused by an employee inadvertently downloading malware, and not an external threat. “We were unable to find any of that. We didn’t find any evidence that anyone had penetrated the system,” Roberts said.

Election officials say they’ve since implemented measures to reinforce the system.

But in a report issued this week entitled “Hacking Elections is Easy," James Scott of the Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology says more needs to be done in every state. “It’s incredibly important to expect more from our elections officials. They should have some type of security training when they come in possession of data," he said.
