Arizona State Parks is kicking off a new project called the Arizona Premier Trail System. This comes in time for the 60th anniversary of the State Parks, which is next year.

KJZZ's Sarah Ventre talked with Glenn Schlottman in the state parks department. He said they’re still in the process of having parks nominated for the designation and that it’s really meant to showcase trails that are of a certain quality.

"While there's thousands of trails in Arizona we're holding these to a whole new standard," Schlottman said.

The criteria include whether there are trail heads, if there's a unique quality to the trail, or historic relevance.

One of Schlottman's favorite trails?

It's in Sabino Canyon in Tucson, Arizona.

"It's actually the trail I took my wife on and asked her to marry me," Schlottman said. "So I'm biased on that trail."
