This election season we’ve heard a lot of talk about “building a wall” along the southern U.S. border. It’s popped up many times in Donald Trump’s speeches, for example.

However, the process of building and maintaining a structure along a borderline — and what that means for the people living there — gets less attention.

Activist and photographer K. Flo Razowsky has been considering these structures. The photos from her project, "Up Against the Wall," have appeared in Slate, The Wall Street Journal and the University of Arizona’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies.

She makes a point of immersing herself in the location she’s photographing. For the past 14 years that’s meant living near border walls and fences in different countries, beginning with the construction of the West Bank barrier in Israel.
