A Senate bill overhauling Arizona’s Campaign Finance System begins debate in the House this week.

Supporters say SB 1516 will help clean up repetitive laws already in place. But opponents like Democrat Steve Farley of Tucson said it will give campaigns more leeway to commit financial abuse.

“We should be serving the needs of the voters and citizens of this state. So that they can know that their elections are being run fairly. So that nobody has any extra advantage if they happen to have any extra money,” Farley said.

The bill would lift the current ban on transferring money from one candidate's campaign to another. As well as the ability for political parties to make unlimited contributions to persons besides committees and nominees.

Supporters of the bill say the changes will promote campaign transparency.
