A recent column in the Arizona Daily Star suggested Arizonans have gotten self-satisfied with our water management, use and conservation methods.

Tim Steller wrote the piece and said in general, we have done a pretty good job.

However, "Things look really different if you look forward. In other words, we may have done well in the past, but the challenges that are going to be, that we’re going to be confronting in the future, are different from what we’ve experienced in the past, not only with population growth but most importantly, with climate change."

Steller said the temptation for Arizona will be to either keep doing what the state’s been doing, or even backslide a bit on measures it already has. His column cites a recent report looking at the effect of climate change in the western U.S.

Thomas Meixner, a professor in hydrology and atmospheric sciences at the University of Arizona co-authored the study. He spoke about the idea.
