The Phoenix Police Department has filled 163 sworn positions this fiscal year, and the Phoenix Fire Department expects to have 75 recruits in 2016.

The new hires for Phoenix police include 17 lateral hires from other law enforcement agencies.

According to a city report, during the 2015 calendar year 2,030 applicants took the written exam, which is the first step in the hiring process. Those who passed then took physical agility tests. According to police records, 1,103 applicants successfully passed both tests and received background packets to complete.

After a six-year hiring freeze, the police department set a goal of hiring 300 officers this fiscal year using the city's public safety fund. Since voters approved Proposition 104, the department will now be able to hire 125 more officers for a total of 425.

Proposition 104, which raised the sales tax by .07 percent over the next 35 years to fund the city's transportation plan, included a provision that would move $16 million earmarked for transportation in the general fund to be used instead for law enforcement.

The Phoenix Police Department continues to recruit and holds monthly exams for qualified applicants.

2014: 21 hires.

2015: 119 hires.

2016: 75 projected recruits.

2017: 32 projected recruits.

2018: 34 projected recruits.

2019: 34 projected recruits.
