The Bullhead City School District is breaking ground on an affordable housing project for its employees. The small neighborhood is designed to help with recruitment and retention.

The district has five acres of property that it’s developing with the help of COVID-19 relief funds.

Superintendent Carolyn Stewart said because Bullhead City is located along the Colorado River, next to California and Nevada, the area gets a lot of tourism, which means rental properties aren’t cheap.

"We had, pre-pandemic, been losing some educators too because they just couldn’t afford the housing that was available or the properties that they were renting were being sold," Stewart said. "This is not intended to be a long-term placement for anyone or a rental, but give them an opportunity then to have time to save some money, perhaps to buy a property themselves or find a more permanent situation."

The district plans to build about 20 three-bedroom homes for employees to live in. The first phase of those will be finished by September 2024.
