Days after Scottsdale mayor’s defended a homeless aid program to state lawmakers, the City Council approved spending roughly $500,000 for another year of hotel rooms.

Councilman Barry Graham was the only member to vote against the measure.

State Rep. Matt Gress had asked last week that Scottsdale commit to not take in migrants or people from the infamous homeless encampment in Phoenix called "the Zone."

Graham unsuccessfully tried on Tuesday to have similar language put into the city’s contract with the hotel.

“And this would be in order to put residents and hotel guests — just a settled heart at ease,” Graham said.

Scottsdale officials say there is a growing number of elderly people and families being forced out of their homes by rising rent and a decreasing cache of affordable housing.
