There’s been a lot of research into a phenomenon called "compassion fatigue" in areas from first responders to teachers. However, according to one school counselor, there has been very little research has been done on her field.

Melissa Manganaro spent a decade as school counselor here in the Valley, but when she started to feel the emotional and physical effects of what she found out was compassion fatigue, she changed course. She took a job in the art department at the high school where she works and completed her PhD dissertation on compassion fatigue in school counselors.

The Show spoke with her more about what she found and why she became a school counselor to begin with.

"How do you expect school counselors to be there ... with one counselor for 1,000 students?"
