Arizona AG joins 21 others to ask court to uphold gun-sale restrictions

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has joined a coalition of attorneys general in asking the U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold a federal rule on age-restricted sales of guns and ammo.

Mayes, and 21 others, have filed a friend-of-the-court brief asking the Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit to uphold a federal ban on selling handguns and ammunition to anyone under 21.

In the brief, the group argues that the Second Amendment allows the government to set up “sensible and varied” protections for the public. That includes age-based limits on purchase, possession, and use of firearms.

In Arizona, there are varying restrictions for buying a firearm between 18 and 20 years old. But the law requires anyone buying from a federally-licensed dealer to be at least 21.
