Hobbs vetoes bill to restrict school employees from using students' preferred pronouns

Published: Monday, May 22, 2023 - 1:32pm

Gov. Katie Hobbs has vetoed a bill that would have restricted the use of preferred pronouns in schools. As of Monday, Hobbs has issued a total of 95 vetoes this session.

Introduced by Republican Sen. John Kavanagh, SB 1001 would have barred school employees from using pronouns for a student that differ from their biological sex without a parent’s permission.

Hobbs explained her decision in a letter dated Friday and referenced similar legislation being passed in other states.

She also promised to be an ally to the “brave young people” who testified against the measure, including Rep. Lorena Austin, a Democrat. Hobbs stated she will “veto every bill that aims to attack and harm children.”
