Have non-perishable food to donate? Leave it by your mailbox Saturday

Arizonans and people around the country are being asked to leave a bag of non-perishable food at their mailboxes Saturday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers is holding its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive to help food banks as residents face increasing costs amid high inflation.

According to the U.S. Postal Service, the event is the country's largest single-day food drive.  

Customer can leave a bag of food at their mailbox Saturday morning before their mail is delivered. The letter carrier with do the rest.

St. Mary’s Food Bank spokesman Jerry Brown said family visits to its facility are at an “all-time high.” St. Mary's Food Bank is looking for food items such as canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, pasta, rice and cereal.

Most-wanted foods include

  • Canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon).
  • Canned and boxed meals (soup, chili, stew, macaroni and cheese).
  • Canned or dried beans and peas (black, pinto, lentils).
  • Pasta, rice cereal.
  • Canned fruits.
  • 100 percent fruit juice (canned, plastic or boxed).
  • Canned vegetables.
  • Cooking oil.
  • Boxed cooking mixes (pancake, breads).
