The Legislature has approved a bill that would expand state laws that allow the sale of “cottage foods” to the general public.

Cottage food is prepared in a home kitchen by an individual who is registered with the state Department of Health Services.

The state passed a similar law in 2010, exempting baked goods. This expands that to home-prepared items that have to be cooked and kept warm.

Republican Rep. Travis Grantham explained his yes vote.

"I understand there are safety concerns with a bill like this. But I personally have never been made ill or had food poisoning from something I've bought from cottage food. I have been made ill at a restaurant, ironically," Grantham said.

The bill now goes to the governor’s desk.
