State lawmakers are moving to allow AA rated eggs to stay on shelves in stores for 30 days, almost a week longer than what is currently allowed.

Arizona is one of two states with such a short limit. Older eggs are not necessarily unsafe, as A graded eggs can remain on sale for 45 days.

Roland Mader with the state’s Department of Agriculture says the bill would result in customers paying for a higher grade egg than they receive.

"If passed, the bill would allow the sale of the lower-grade A egg as a grade AA, making it more convenient for the distributor to sell eggs at the cost of the Arizona customer,” Mader said.

The bill has passed the House, and now heads to the full Senate.
