Recently publicized video of the arrest and beating death of Tyre Nichols by a special unit of the Memphis Police Department is drawing widespread condemnation across the country, including in Arizona.

A number of people are calling for reforms to policing and the criminal justice system as a whole. Arizona civil rights activist Rev. Jarrett Maupin is one of them.

“I think we have to have immediately, all over the country, these advisory panels and review boards, these civilian boards. People have to become interest holders, the public, in their police department. People have got to get involved," he said.

Maupin also says he supports Rev. Martin Luther King Jr's push for non violence and added that “now more than ever, people need to be vocal."

“Memphis, like Phoenix, must be scrutinized and held to account over the actions of its police force. The fact that five Black officers killed a Black man is irrelevant. Police brutality is not and never has been synonymous with race or racism. Police brutality has everything to do with the content of one’s character and nothing to do with color of one’s skin," Maupin said in a statement Friday.
