Tucson, Phoenix mayors sign onto a letter advocating for DACA fix in Congress

Dozens of mayors around the U.S. have signed onto a letter calling for lawmakers to pass legislation to protected undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as kids — also known as "Dreamers."

The letter’s signatories include Tucson Mayor Regina Romero and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego. They say they’re disappointed by a lack of action from Congress to pass immigration reform for Dreamers — including DACA recipients.

The Obama-era program gives temporary protection from deportation and a work permit to hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. But it’s been in legal limbo for years.

Now, a case brought by Texas could end the program entirely. If that happens, the mayors say more than a million DACA-eligible people could be up for deportation, and unable to work. They say Congress must pass legislation to protect them before the case progresses.

"We call on Congress to — without further delay — enact legislation that offers permanent solutions for Dreamers. Together, we stand in solidarity with Dreamers and vow to continue supporting all immigrants living in our cities and counties. The time to act is now," the letter read.
