Residents in Two West Valley communities now have another way to get around.

WeRIDE is a microtransit system available in Avondale and Goodyear. Users of the service can hail rides via an app, among other methods to catch a ride. But unlike Uber and Lyft, they can’t get picked up from just anywhere. Users meet their driver at a predetermined public zone, similar to a bus stop, and get dropped off at any number of designated zones within the city.

Avondale has 275 such pre-determined stops.

“We really try to hit those areas that we believe are destinations where our residents want to go. We are able to make adjustments to those destinations based on data we receive,” said Harold Siguenza, deputy for Public Works at the city of Avondale.

Siguenza says Avondale has a bus, but the routes lost popularity during and after the pandemic.

“We were seeing that levels of riders or that ridership levels were not returning to pre-COVID-19 numbers that's when we kind of knew okay there is a shift in culture, there is a shift in means for transit,” said Siguenza

Siguenza says the microtransit system will provide a more personalized way for people to get around the city. WeRide costs $2 dollars per trip and is available Monday through Friday. A free trial period runs through December 5th.

Goodyear and Avondale both have Google maps with the public locations where residents can access WeRIDE
