Maricopa County elections officials held a press conference Monday afternoon to dispel rumors ahead of Election Day.

People in and outside of the state have been spreading misinformation about Arizona’s election on social media, claiming Maricopa County officials are interfering with votes.

One of the biggest misconceptions is that if ballot counting isn’t completed on election night, that’s proof of fraud. Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Gates said that’s not true. He said the count takes several days for a lot of reasons, like mail in voting and an extensive signature verification process.

“There are literally state laws in place that give people days to correct like their identification," Gates said. "If they don’t have identification with them, they have days to respond, to get back to us with the IDs.”

The county plans to release an initial round of counted ballots at 8 p.m. on Tuesday but final results could take several days.
