The federal government is giving $35 million to the Navajo Nation for an enhanced 911 system and the rural addressing initiative.

The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act and aims to help assist the Navajo Nation’s emergency responses and preparedness for disasters.

The system will link a telephone number to a permanent address that will clearly identify where a caller is located, helping to quicken response times.

The funding will also help provide more consistent signage and provide numbers for all property throughout the Navajo Nation.

In a statement, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said the money will help improve communications infrastructure for emergency services.

Nez also authorized an additional $500,000 to support the police department’s drug enforcement efforts.
