Seven years after Mexico’s Supreme Court said laws banning same-sex marriage were unconstitutional, couples can now legally marry in every state in the country.

The Tamaulipas state Congress voted in favor of a marriage equality reform Wednesday, becoming the final state to allow same-sex couples to marry as easily as straight couples. That vote came just a day after legislators in Guerrero passed a similar law.

The reforms bring those states in line with a 2015 Supreme Court ruling in Mexico that said laws defining marriage as solely between a man and a woman are unconstitutional. However, it has taken more than seven years for laws to change nationwide.

Mexico City was the first state to implement marriage equality in 2010. Neighboring Sonora passed a reform in 2021. In the year since, more than 350 same-sex couples have married in Sonora — more than twice as many as had ever been married in the state before reforms passed.
