Arizona has been dealing with a teacher shortage for several years now.

Data from last month shows more than a quarter of teacher vacancies in the state are still unfilled, and that more than 40% of all vacancies are being filled by teachers who don’t meet the state’s requirements for standard certification.

Arizona is not the only state that needs more teachers, although just how many are needed nationwide is a bit murky.

Madeline Will, a reporter at Education Week, has written about this; she covers the teaching profession.

The Show spoke with her to learn how the situation in Arizona compares nationally.
