Phoenix police recently said detectives are investigating officers who shot and killed a man after he ignored orders to stop throwing rocks.

Now the local chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for an independent review.

Phoenix police say last weekend an officer saw 34-year-old Ali Osman throwing rocks toward his patrol car. Osman reportedly did not obey orders to stop. Police shot him.

Azza Abuseif, executive director of CAIR Arizona, said Osman was a refugee from Somalia.  

“It’s really important for the city of Phoenix to arrange an independent criminal investigation into the officers,” said Abuseif. 

Nearly a year and a half after its creation, Phoenix's accountability office for doing independent reviews of police is only able to monitor investigations.

The director recently said that the top concern for families of people involved in police shootings has been getting information on what happened.
