Daily multivitamin could slow cognitive decline among adults 65 and older, study shows
Taking a daily multivitamin could slow cognitive decline among adults 65 and older. That’s according to a three year study of more than 2,000 people.
"While the results are encouraging, we're not saying it's time to go out, get your multivitamins, [because] this is going to reduce the risk for all older adults," said Kinsey McManus is with the Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.
The study did show a statistically significant cognitive benefit.
"So, we're looking at something that's relatively safe for most people, it's easily accessible, it's affordable generally, that could be used across the older adult population to reduce their risk," McManus said.
The study also looked at the possible benefits of cocoa extract. That had no impact on cognition.
"We're really excited to see some larger confirmatory studies will say one piece we really need to see is a more diverse study population," McManus said. "We really want to make sure that if this is the case, and it really does low cognitive decline, that we can say that it's going to work for all populations."
The study appeared in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.
