The city of Phoenix Office of Environmental Programs has kicked off the next cohort of its Backyard Garden Program, which will give a free garden to more than 90 Phoenix households.

The program offers participants the choice of a raised-bed garden, an aquaponics system or a regenerative agriculture system called a LEHR garden.

An acronym for Linking Ecosystem & Hardware for Regeneration, LEHR gardens use organic techniques and technology to create self-contained ecologies.

The city program also provides free training, support and maintenance for one year

Backed by American Rescue Plan Act funds, it will provide 92 gardens in its first year and 178 more in year two.

Applications are open until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 30.
