Arizona transportation officials are planning a near total shutdown of a popular rest area on Interstate 17 north of Phoenix.

Sunset Point will only be open for commercial trucks during a monthslong renovation that starts July 11.

The Arizona Department of Transportation is spending $7.5 million to renovate Sunset Point and make the rest area more accessible for people with disabilities.

Crews will rebuild bathrooms, sewers and water lines. They also plan to modernize ramada coverings, sidewalks and lighting.

Sunset Point will still have limited space for commercial trucks while work is underway.

State officials urge all other travelers to use the bathroom and stretch their legs in Black Canyon City or Cordes Junction.

The renovation of Sunset Point is forecast to be done by spring.
