A federal judge this week ruled Phoenix can prevent pet stores from selling animals raised in so-called “puppy mills.”

The lawsuit was over a Phoenix ordinance approved in 2013 and appears to affect one store in the city.

We have two perspectives on the ruling and its implications, starting with Judith Gardner, president and CEO of the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA.

We also talked to Mike Bober, executive vice president of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, who is unhappy with the Phoenix ordinance. He said other communities have somewhat similar provisions, but Phoenix’s had one unique quality — that it directly impacts a single store, Puppies ‘n’ Love in Paradise Valley Mall.

Bober said he’s talked with the store’s owner, Frank Mineo.
