The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is set to fire April Sponsel, the prosecutor who brought gang charges against Black Lives Matter protesters that were later dismissed.

Sponsel had been with the County Attorney’s Office for 18 years but has been on paid leave for more than a year.

County Attorney’s Office officials cited “extreme overcharging” in five cases in 2020 as the reason for her firing, according to documents obtained by ABC 15. Cases include charging Phoenix Black Lives Matter protestors as members of a criminal street gang in 2020.

Sponsel has already filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging she was “scapegoated” by former County Attorney Allister Adel. The county told Sponsel that her termination is not finalized, and requested she meet with county officials next week.

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond to KJZZ News' request for comment.
