The Arizona Senate Education Committee has approved a bill that would give parents the ability to review books coming to school libraries.

The measure, which has already passed the House of Representatives, allows parents to review the books for at least 60 days before the district buys them and raise any concerns to the governing board.

While bill sponsor Beverly Pingerelli says the measure is about transparency, special education teacher Alicia Messing worries it will censor books.

“We must remember the purpose of public education is not to teach only what parents want them to be taught, it is to teach them what society needs for them to know," Messing said.

The bill now moves to the Senate Rules Committee.
