The communications director for Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel was dismissed Thursday.

Jennifer Liewer wrote in an email that the communications team should focus on the work the office does, not defending Adel’s "sobriety and leadership."

Liewer gave her three-week notice Wednesday, citing a "loss of trust and confidence" in Adel.

Adel entered a treatment facility for alcoholism, an eating disorder and anxiety in late August. Adel says she completed 29 days of combined inpatient and outpatient treatment, and returned to work in September.

The Arizona Republic reported Liewer was escorted out of the building Thursday, but a statement from the office claimed she will assist in the transition of leadership in her position.

Liewer’s resignation notice included a request that the office hire an independent public relations firm to handle matters relating to Adel's sobriety.
