Sonora expects to receive nearly $50 million in federal assistance for water infrastructure.

The funding will go toward drinking water, sewage and water treatment projects, according to Sonoran Gov. Alfonso Durazo, who recently signed an agreement with the National Water Commission.

None of the money will come out of the state’s 2022 budget, according to a state release.

Included in the list of projects are some destined for the mining city of Cananea, as well as several Sonoran indigenous peoples. That includes the Comcaac, whose communities on the Sea of Cortez regularly do not have reliable access to drinking water.
