The Department of Homeland Security says some Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will begin wearing body cameras.

The first phase of the program will roll out in a handful of U.S. cities and have officers with the agency’s Homeland Security Investigations wear cameras during pre-planned operations.

DHS Secretary Alejandro Majorkas said the program was one step in a process to increase transparency within the agency.

Agents within Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, investigate drug smuggling, trafficking and other transnational crime. The pilot program is supposed to expand to agents within Enforcement and Removal Operations, the ICE wing responsible for immigration enforcement raids and deportations of undocumented immigrants.

But DHS did not give a timeframe for those next steps and said it was still in negotiations with the wing’s union.
