The holiday season can be a busy time for scammers. And one of the state’s largest utilities, SRP, is warning customers not to be caught off-guard.

SRP spokesperson Kathleen Mascarenas said the electric and water utility will never use aggressive tactics to demand immediate payments over the phone.

“We want to give you time to pay your bill, we want to help you out, so if you’re feeling pressured or scared on the phone, it is definitely not us," Mascarenas said.

She recommends hanging up and calling the official SRP phone number if you’re feeling unsure.

Mascarenas said SRP has also noted a recent trend in door-to-door scammers claiming to be selling weatherization upgrades or solar power programs.

“We’re telling folks if someone shows up at your door and claims to be with SRP or any other company, could be APS, ask for that badge, ask for the ID, see if there’s a marked vehicle parked in the front yard," Mascarenas said. "You have to be very attentive and very aware.”
