Families should prepare to use alternative food brands for Thanksgiving dinner because the supply chain shortage could affect their meal. They also should expect to pay more.

Thanksgiving turkeys will not be affected by the supply chain shortage because grocery retailers have contracts with farmers but because of the labor shortage, families could see larger birds in stores.

However, the total bill for your thanksgiving meal might be higher than last year. Doug Baker is the vice president of the Food Industry Association. 

“Be prepared to substitute, you might not find your favorite brand or your favorite ingredient. Start thinking about what else you might be able to substitute, what other ingredients or brands could you substitute in order to have that favorite dish," Baker said. 

Families should prepare in advance and sign up for grocery store loyalty programs to reduce the cost of their Thanksgiving meal. Baker encourages families to plan their budget out and everyone should be able to get a turkey this year.
