Q&AZ: Will Phoenix ever bring back its city history museum?
Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix is home to historical buildings and educational landmarks, but one museum is no longer present.
Through KJZZ’s Q&AZ Project, a listener asked: Will Phoenix ever bring back its city history museum?
The Phoenix Museum of History moved into Heritage Square in 1996, after the city provided $8 million for a new building.
The museum was managed by a local nonprofit, which experienced financial difficulties during the recession of the late 2000s.
The nonprofit, which is now defunct, made a deal with the Arizona Science Center in 2009 to take the collections and archives from the museum, as well as take over the operating agreement of the building.
The building is now the CREATE Makerspace, part of the Arizona Science Center, but a city representative says the collection can still be found in the same building.
