The Associated General Contractors of America said employment in June remained below the pre-pandemic peak in Arizona and 38 other states.

Using government data, the association found Arizona had 174,200 construction jobs in June 2021 compared to 176,300 in February 2020, a difference of 2,100, or 1.2%.

The Association ranked Arizona 20th for percentage of jobs losses during the 16-month period. Idaho lost the highest percentage at 8%, followed by Utah at 6.1% and Rhode Island at 5.9%.

Since the pandemic began, Utah, Idaho, South Dakota and Rhode Island have added the largest number of construction jobs.

The association says contractors are postponing projects due to higher materials costs, long production times for key items and delayed deliveries. In a news release, the group said employment is unlikely to grow in many parts of the country until supply chain issues improve.

From February 2020 to June 2021, construction employment increased in 11 states and was  flat in Washington, D.C.
