The United States has begun what it deemed safety work on segments of the U.S.-Mexico border wall in southwestern Arizona.

The Army Corps of Engineers has started remediating unfinished border wall projects in the Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector. A spokesperson said the project consists of completing unfinished parts of the project that President Joe Biden halted shortly after taking office. 

That includes filling open trenches, closing off conduit lines, and making maintenance roads safe. None of the projects involve expanding the border wall.

Environmentalists have argued for months that when the U.S. stopped work on the border wall, it also abandoned pieces of the wall project peppered along the border. That included piles of junk left in the Pajarito Wilderness, coils of razor wire dropped near Kino Springs, and unfinished dirt roads along portions of the region.
