The Peoria Police Department is receiving about $189,000 from a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety from funds related to Prop. 207.

The Peoria Police Department is expected to receive about $189,000 from a grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety. The grant funds are coming from one-time money related to the recently passed Proposition 207, which legalized recreational marijuana.

Peoria police plan to use the money to buy new technology that will improve its DUI and accidents investigations, said spokeswoman Amanda Gaines. This includes a drone and software that can diagram and reconstruct accident scenes. This new equipment was on the department’s list of priorities for whenever new funding became available, Gaines added.

“Unfortunately traffic accidents are a big part of investigations in the city of Peoria, and we want to make sure that we are giving as much attention and updates to technology and software that we can," she said.

The department also plans to purchase a new vehicle and new breath alcohol tester.
