Gambling Addicts Fear New Betting Bill Is Shortsighted

Published: Friday, April 16, 2021 - 2:25pm

Gov. Doug Ducey on Thursday signed into law a bill that opens sports betting in Arizona.

While the measure is sure to generate revenue for the state, David Appleby with Gambler’s Anonymous fears addiction to gambling will grow.

“I think so many people who might find it interesting who never even gambled before could place a bet and get hooked just like that. I mean that’s how it started for me,” he said.

Appleby said he understands the need for the state to generate revenue but at the same time, those in government need to better comprehend what goes through the mind of a compulsive gambler.

The bill allows betting on professional and college sports at sites owned by pro sports teams and at tribal casinos.

It also allows gambling on fantasy sports and new Keno games at horse racing tracks and fraternal organizations.
