Immigration to the U.S. has dropped dramatically during the Trump administration, with a lot of the attention focused on enforcement policies related to undocumented immigrants. But legal immigration has also seen huge limits, and those became even starker in 2020 because of the pandemic. Legal immigration dropped nearly 90%, mostly due to COVID-19.

Alex Nowrasteh of the Cato Institute has co-written a book called "Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions," which examines arguments for and against expanded immigration — with economic perspectives at its core.

The Show spoke with him for more about the relationship between immigration and the economy.
