3,434 New COVID-19 Cases Reported As Arizona Approaches Summer Surge Levels

Arizona reported 3,434 new positive cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday — that’s the highest one-day total since July 25. Other metrics show the virus spreading rapidly through the state, too.

Arizona saw an exponential surge of COVID-19 cases back in June, then new daily cases began falling in early July — a few weeks after the governor allowed cities and counties to enact mask requirements. But Arizona’s new daily cases have been steadily rising again since late September.

Though the state has been performing more COVID-19 tests since September, the rate of new cases is outpacing the increase in testing. As of last week, the state reported the positivity rate of tests performed was around 9%. The state's weekly test positivity rate hasn’t been that high since July.

Hospitalizations, Ventilator usage, and ICU bed usage are also trending upward.

As of Tuesday, 6,192 Arizonans had died of COVID-19.
