Arizona has voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use, a decade after the state legalized medicinal cannabis. 

The measure is a win for Arizona’s marijuana community and businesses.

Four years ago, voters rejected a ballot measure to legalize marijuana that fractured the pro-cannabis community in Arizona.

This go around, backers of Prop. 207 sought consensus for a measure that was heavily backed by existing medical marijuana dispensaries, which stand to benefit from selling marijuana for recreational use.

Stacy Pearson, a spokeswoman for the Prop. 207 campaign, said voters are no longer convinced by dire warnings of marijuana overrunning Arizona.

"We are not sliding marijuana into Safeway next to the arugula. If people don't want to buy marijuana, they don't have to. They don't go to marijuana store. It's that simple. So our opponents, their wild scare tactic didn't work again," Pearson said.

Adults at least 21-years-old will be legally allowed to possess and use marijuana as soon as late November, when all the votes are counted and results are certified.

A 16% tax on the sale of recreational marijuana is earmarked for community colleges, public safety and public health programs.
