Roman Mars is the author of "The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design."

Whether it’s roads, buildings, or items big and small around the house, there are a lot of things we simply don’t notice — or even take for granted. But design is all around us — at all times.

That’s part of the premise of the "99% Invisible" podcast created by Roman Mars in collaboration with the American Institute of Architects in San Francisco.

Mars has dug more deeply into those topics — with more of an emphasis on our communities — in the new book "The 99% Invisible City: A Field Guide to the Hidden World of Everyday Design."

The Show spoke with him about the balancing act he employs to treat design at the level that is passionate for him, but still accessible to listeners and readers.
