Eliana Pipes was chosen this summer by Arizona Theatre Company as the 2020 National LatinX Playwright for her play, "Dream Hou$e," a piece about gentrification set in the sphere of a reality TV show.

Theater stages have been dark for months because of the pandemic, as few of us are comfortable sitting close together — or even within 6 feet — to watch indoor performances. But the show must go on, at least in some sense.

Recently, Arizona Theatre Company tried to do its part by continuing its annual tradition of giving a National Latinx Playwriting Award.

This year’s winner was Eliana Pipes for her play "Dream Hou$e," which mixes comedy and drama in a story about two Latinx sisters.

The Show spoke with Pipes about playwriting and diversity, and began by asking her how important it is to present audiences with a play that provides specific examples of what it means to be Latinx or African American rather than something more generic.
