Luke Air Force Base plans to expand operations over the next few years. The West Valley is expecting significant population growth as a result.

Luke Air Force Base projects its expansion will bring more than 7,000 people, including military personnel and their families, to the West Valley by 2026. A management plan released this week addresses how cities like Glendale, Surprise and Goodyear can adapt. The base worked with the Maricopa Association of Governments on the study.

“Luke’s desire is to be a great neighbor and asset to the West Valley. This joint planning effort has cemented our respect for the people and communities who create the space we call home," said Brig. Gen. Gregory Kreuder.

The study considered potential impacts on schools, the housing market, jobs and traffic. It says the West Valley is well positioned to absorb a growing population but makes recommendations, including increasing school districts’ and employers’ awareness of the needs of military families.
